Gender Norms and Environmental Change

 Gender Roles and Climate Change

Recently I attended a conference about gender roles and their effects on climate. The guest speaker was Dr. Nuran Talu and she answered one of my questions and talked about the relationship between gender and the environment.

Although the conference was about the climate we somehow ended up on the topic of classism and how low-income areas are left on their own in the climate war. I asked a question about how income levels affect the rural areas' relations with climate change. Then the discussion became a discussion about education and GAP. GAP (Güneydoğu Anadolu project) is a project created by the Turkish government to help with agricultural activities in the more rural areas of turkey. We talked about the unfair distribution of funds and how it's the governers duty to accommodate the needs of people who are in the agricultural business.

The conference really made me feel less alone as a feminist who also is interested in the effects of gender roles in the environment. This conference also made me do more research about eco-feminism which is a form of feminism that connects womanhood to nature. This new sense of community also encouraged me to learn more about protecting the environment and women's rights.

And this is a screen shot of the conference.
